Roland Emmerich is the director and executive producer for film 2012. He is a German film director and screenwriter for most of English-language Hollywood productions. 2012 has nominated for the Saturn Award as the best action or adventure film. In this movie, there are some conflicts and incidents that attracted me to analyze or discover more for the answers. For the example, the character of Charlie Frost adds a lot of colours to movie even though he was just a supporting character. In the movie, he is a brilliant fringe science conspiracy theorist and knew the world will come to the end. He stayed in Yellowstone to broadcast about the eruption of the volcano. In this incident, I really wonder, why Charlie didn’t save himself from the natural disaster with Jackson when Jackson drove to him to gain information about the map? He was fully understood about the natural disaster and what was happening around him. He even knew the actual position of the arks or spaceships that government prepared to save the mankind from the disaster. Jackson had offered Charlie to run together with him by airstrip but he refused. I really cannot figure out why Charlie did not try to find a way to aboard the arks, as he already had the map, instead, he climbed up high to the mountain on the day he knew eruption will happened. He rather stayed on the mountain and died because of the Yellowstone Caldera eruption. I think the percentage of Charlie to survive is very high because he is a science conspiracy theorist, a brilliant person. I feel frustrated and think it is a pity for Charlie to sacrifice himself for nothing; just to make an announcement that the world is about to end. On the other hand, I can imagine that he is analyzing the eruption of the next natural disaster and announcing it to more people about the situation if he did not died in that incident.

            In 2012, I found another conflict created by the President of the United State of America, Thomas F. Wilson. I think he is a responsible person but at the same time, he did something which I did not agree much. First, I think he fulfilled his responsibility well as a president because he announced the reality of natural disaster to the nation by broadcasting. From my opinion, he is a brave person because he is willing to step into the darkness with his people. He stood together with his people even though he has the requirement, power and money, to buy a seat in the arks and save himself. His braveness makes me remind the characteristic of a father, who will protect his own children even he needs to sacrifice his own life. As predicted, he was killed by a mega tsunami that attacked the White House when he was reminding of his wife, Dorothy, who has passed away. However, I think it is not the ending that I hope for. Even though he missed his wife a lot and hope to be together with his wife after he died but, he still need to think and take care for his daughter, Laura Wilson. He abandoned his own daughter after he sent his daughter to the arks. In my opinion, even though he misses his wife very much but, he needs to stay alive and protects his own child and fulfill his duty as a father. From the beginning, he did not tell Laura honestly about the building of the arks and he also did not tell Laura that he would not aboard the arks. Because Laura only have his father as her family member that she can really depend on so, I think the president should consider more for his daughter and not just bought a seat in the arks for her daughter. The president should stay by his daughter’s side when the tragedy happened. Actually, I think this character has presented a confusion stand for me as a president protected his people but a father was not able to stay and protect his own daughter.

Discovering further about the movie, I found an interesting character that I can evaluate. I think Carl Anheuser played an important role in 2012 when he acted as antagonist who interfere the world population saving process. His character stunned out in this movie since the beginning. He was keeping a secret, about the arks and a mega natural disaster that will happen, and assuring the secret would not reach to the public. I think he was doing all he could when he decided something. Unfortunately, he planned and worked hard for bad and evil thing. He even dare to kill anyone who want to announce the secret, there was arks that can save lives, to the public. He killed Louvre’s curator and warned Dr. Adrian Helmsley that wished to warn the world about the natural disaster. I think this is a cruel character because he even did not want to warn his ex-wife about the natural disaster and bought a seat for her in the arks. What I can conclude is, this is a dark character that prevent in human saving mission. For an example, he still tried to protest when Dr. Adrian Hemsley convinced G-8 to let the remaining population to get into the arks. At last, Carl Anheuser did not appear after the incident and I presumed he may force to quit his job after preventing the human population saving process. This character has decorated the whole storyline attractively and I think, without this antagonist character, there will not much suspense and intense scenes occur.
